We’re eloping

Author:

I don’t mean to neglect this blog, but with all the wedding planning, I’ve been far too busy to write.

Oh yes, the boy and I have decided to elope on Mackinac Island July 25.

The moms are coming, as well as his sister-in-law, her little boy and my sister.   Here’s the rundown of our plans:

The Metivier Inn: Where we’re staying and also where we’re holding the ceremony.

After which, we will take an hour-long carriage ride (think the carriage from Cinderella) around the island.  A photographer will follow on bike (no cars allowed on the island) and take photos at scenic spots along the way.

A small dinner/reception will be held in the 1852 Grill Room at the Island House Hotel.

When Brandon first proposed, I felt like we had to have that traditional wedding/ceremony type event that everyone loathes and feels free to complain liberally about.   Since we are insistent on getting married on July 25 – the day we first met – the only option was to wait till 2009 when it fell on a Saturday.

We both wanted a small wedding, but as we went through the guest list of family and friends and people we didn’t even know but were expected to invite nonetheless, the list grew by leaps and bounds.  Brandon suggested an immediate family and friends only event we could have on a Friday evening next year.

I think our decision was made a few weeks ago when we both caught Talk of the Nation with Amy Dickinson of Ask Amy and author Rebecca Mead of One Fine Day.  Both guests recounted the sheer and utter ridiculousness the business of wedding has become, with people spending tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars on one day in their life.  If Brandon and I had one hundred thousand dollars, we could pay off the house.

After discussing the show, both Brandon and I felt like we didn’t want the whole traditional ceremony shindig.  Neither of us like to be the center of attention, and the ceremony felt staged, as if we were showing off our love to other people, not ourselves.  So, when Brandon asked where we would go to get married, I immediately said “Mackinac Island.”  Yes, yes, I am one of those crazy Somewhere in Time cult followers.

So, everything is set: the dress is being altered, the suit is bought, minister is lined up and all mention of god is stricken from his speech, photographer is reserved, etc…  The only thing left to do is wait for the big day.

I have no doubt that your choice of Groom is far better than George Clooney, yes, I still have my membership card…
